Shaving precious grams and millimetres off the original iPad, Apple's second tablet is again a marvellous feat of gadget engineering.

Scrapping the rounded back of the original, Apple has taken design tips from the MacBook Air and iPhone 4 for the iPad 2’s angular-edged, flat-backed look, with Apple's trademark, brushed aluminium casing.

That it's also managed to fit a 1GHz dualcore processor, much improved graphics chip, two cameras and a touchscreen that knows how hard you're prodding it into a case much slimmer and lighter than on iPad #1, at a lower price, is rather magical.

Even the device's magnetic Smart Covers got some tech-watchers frothing. Who'd think you'd ever have said that about a protective case?
