From humble Swedish beginnings to the world’s biggest music streaming service, Spotify features millions of tracks, a simple interface and compatibility across desktop, web and mobile. And since a link-up with Facebook it’s more social than ever.

Spotify is now the world’s number one music streaming service, with 24 million active users and 6 million paying subscribers.

The former get free ad-supported streaming of up to 10 hours of music a month, while those willing to part with cash have the limits and ads stripped away, and in the case of Premium subscribers, higher quality streaming and the ability to stream songs on a phone or tablet – and even cache them there for offline listening.

Despite similar services such as Rdio, Xbox Music and now Google Play Music All Access vying for the public’s attention, Spotify remains top of the pile due to its ease of use, its range of third-party apps (from the likes of Pitchfork, Last.fm, Songkick and Shuffler.fm) and its strong social element, which sees it link you up to your Facebook friends to share playlists and individual tracks.
