The world’s most popular social network needs little introduction, featuring over one billion users and having had a David Fincher movie made about its genesis and growth. There’s a good chance that even your gran might be on it.

Mark Zuckerberg’s social network Facebook has had a rough time of late, being the subject of a somewhat critical blockbuster movie, having all sorts of accusations about violations of privacy levelled at it, and undergoing a somewhat farcical flotation on the stock market.

But none of that has come close to changing the fact that it’s by far the most popular website of its type, with over a billion users currently logging in to communicate with friends, “like” witty status updates and scroll jadedly through pictures of people they fancy.

While there are signs that Facebook’s popularity may be waning, particularly among young people and those in the developed world, it’s still by far the most important of all the social networks. Heck, for most of the world it is the only social network. It allows millions upon millions to connect with each other. And for that reason it’s on our awards list.
